Who can join the CIT?

Undertakings may join the CIT as Full Members if they provide international rail transport under the terms of COTIF or under other international sets of regulations.

The following may join the CIT as Associate Members,

  • associations of undertakings with a legal personality whose members
    • provide international rail transport, or
    • manage railway infrastructure on which such transport is provided, or
    • provide services in connection with international rail transport operations or the management of infrastructure;
  • Undertakings that manage railway infrastructure.

What benefits does membership of the CIT bring?

CIT Members may use all the documents and other material prepared by the association for international traffic by rail without charge (for example, the international consignment note (and thus the simplified transit procedure by rail), the designs for international tickets, the manuals giving instructions for their use, etc.).

The CIT represents the interests of its members, both to appropriate governmental organisations (OTIF, UNECE, OSJD) and to infrastructure managers' organisations (EIM, RNE). It works closely with other railway organisations (UIC, CER) (à the CIT, other railway trade associations).

Every member is encouraged to participate actively in CIT meetings and committees (à the CIT, organisation).

The CIT arranges training courses for members, both courses open to all members and specially designed courses.

Members may count on competent and rapid professional advice from the CIT General Secretariat.

Members may take part in all the events organised by the CIT under preferential conditions.

What major projects is the CIT involved with currently?

·  Implementation of the EC Regulation on Passengers’ Rights for 3 December 2009
·
Implementation of the e-RailFreight project (electronic consignment note)
·
Making the CIM and SMGS legally interoperable (common CIM/SMGS consignment note)
·  European General Terms and Conditions of Use of Infrastructure Eur.GTC.

What does CIT Membership cost?

The costs of the Association are allocated between the Full Members in the following way:

10 % in equal shares between all the Full Members;

30 % dependent on the passenger kilometres which they achieve in CIV traffic as a carrier or sub-contracting carrier within the meaning of Article 3 of the CIV Uniform Rules (currently 25.37 CHF/pkm in millions);

60 % dependent on the net tonne kilometres which they achieve in CIM traffic as a carrier or sub-contracting carrier within the meaning of Article 3 of the CIM Uniform Rules (currently 7.43 CHF/tkm in millions).

The maximum fee from a Full Member may not exceed 15% of the total of the costs to be allocated.

Membership fees for Associate Members are fixed by the CIT Executive Committee as a function of the significance of the association.

Whatever membership fee a Full Member pays, he receives one vote.
