Railway 200, a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the modern railway
2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the modern railway.
An innovation initially from Great Britain that has continued its journey across the globe.
Back to the origins: from 1825 to 1863, the Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was the first railway company to use steam locomotives, operating in the north-east of England .
200 years later, through a series of activities and events during 2025, the British rail industry, under the umbrella of the Rail Delivery Group, is organising Railway 200, a series of events illustrating how rail shaped the world.
Railway 200 will also encourage more people to take the train and invite the next generation of pioneering talent to join the railway.
